More Detail in October:
The Art Department offers two six-week sessions during the winter months from November through February. Our art classes are unstructured with individual help provided by the instructors as needed. The classes will be limited to 6 per class. There are 6 tables so there will be1 person per table so we can do social distancing and masks will be required. There is a bottle of disinfectant is in the room and participants will be encouraged ot bring hand sanitizer.
Basics are taught in a relaxed atmosphere with demonstrations in color, balance, technique, space and perspective. Classes are fun, and open discussion is encouraged. Experienced instructors are helpful and encourage individual creativity. Any questions about the Art Room should be addressed to the coordinator, Alicia Short at [email protected] To contact any of the instructors for information about her class email to the above email address.
Fine Arts Show
At the conclusion of the winter session the Art Department holds its annual Fine Arts Show in Farnsworth Hall. Students and instructors alike show their work, which is judged by a paid local artist. Ribbons are awarded for First, Second, and Third place in a number of categories including beginning and advanced. There is also the highly prized "People's Choice" ribbon. Following the art show, the art room is open one or two days a week for open painting. Open painting usually lasts through March as long as there is interest.

The Art Department came into existence in 1976. At one time there were over 100 members enrolled in the classes which, in the early days, also included sculpture and sand painting. Today we offer classes in oil, watercolor, acrylic, and palate knife painting as well as sketching, collage and monoprint. We also sponsor workshops with artists from around the Phoenix area.
